Gamers get hella uncomfortable over male sexuality too. Can you imagine a “good male character who just happens to be wearing sexually exploitative outfits because he’s ok with his masculinity?” Constantly has the camera pan lovingly over his asscrack and firm glutes, and big ole dangly ballsack that is totes sweaty from all this MMA and soldiering. Time to hit the showers, and do you, personally, think it’s ok to have a long slow pan up the dude’s package (indiscreetly hidden in a jock of course), to his chiseled physique and erect nipples (pierced). He’s not even a Bond-esque confident man, he’s basically a weird Bowie caricature that’s constantly having near-dickslips in every single cinematic as the completely nonsexualized female characters do their business of being gruff and shooting dudes and advancing the plot. Finally, at the end he falls in love (out of nowhere) and/or is killed by the big baddie.

a forum post I read recently, trying to give a solid example of what ‘male objectification in gaming ’ would actually look like if it was anything equivalent to current female objectification in gaming. (via nothingbutsurrender)

I think I reblogged this before, but I’m just gonna reblog it again.

So fantastically accurate.

Gamasutra: Triple-A Games for Women? Seriously?

Obnoxious title aside, this is an interesting interview about a female-founded company that aims to “make triple-A games for women.”

A few of the points in there made me frown (of all the examples…Twilight!?), and someone left a good comment about how “women’s games” shouldn’t need to involve playing with kids. Still, I hope Transform Entertainment is a success - I mean, at least they’re trying! I want it to be a step in the right direction. I’ll try to ignore the god-awful logo.

What I really want to hear, eventually, is “triple-A games BY women.” Let those games draw what audience they will. The desire to ‘tap that market’ is there, clearly; it’s the approach that I think is flawed. With the huge majority of game developers being male it’s no surprise that the hardcore player base has a similar male-to-female ratio. Diversify the perspectives involved in MAKING the games and I think the audience will follow.

/End rant.

(The given character screencap from Prime World.)

I see no sign in that one photo that you’ve moved away from the “all females are strictly human sex objects but males can be whatever fantastic archetype you can imagine” ghetto. So for ****’s sake, stop trying to shove me into that itty-bitty dress. I want my scratched-up leather armor and facial scars. ~Asterai

So I get to pay less to wear a pink haltertop or ride a unicorn sidesaddle. Yep.
Nope.

"HAY GUYZ there are too many men playing our game! WHAT DO!!"
Hire some women. Then, listen to them.
Yep…I still think the skewed gamer numbers goes back to the even more skewed game dev numbers. Would LOOOVE to see what came out of a female-headed game team. -_- Someday, please?

-_- Oh, gaming industry. Sometimes I think you will never learn.

Even the comments on this focus on how gender-based mechanics will affect the guys who’d be playing. (The one response from an actual XX chromosome person is spot on, though). In short: stop with the condescending ‘woman-targeted’ crap. Just make good games please. Maybe try putting sexy men in there if you want more of a female audience. It’s not rocket science.

Found these in the comments of an interesting article here: http://borderhouseblog.com/?p=7418 …which also touches on some interesting discussion on male/female aliens/fantasy races etc. I love Mass Effect to death, but the difference between the alien ‘choices’ always make me frown. You’ve got the hyper sexual for-some-reason Asari, who look like models painted blue with some alien hair. Aside from skin color and the tubey hair, a human female. And then for the ladies, they created Thane - who I LOVE as a character - but he gets the REALLY alien face. Not that he’s not weirdly attractive…but it’s interesting that they felt they could push the male character further from human. I attribute all of this to the huge majority of game devs being male, of course…no matter what sex the concept or character artist is, they have to get their ideas approved by a lot of other mostly-male people. (I hate that bit about the concept artists being lazy or uncreative in that quote in the article, arg!!!) I’ve seen it happen too often, even at my own studio. BUT ANYWAY.
…I’m glad the female Charr look beastly!
